Beginning the Journey
ReplyDeleteWell, it's January 7th and we had a snow day. My kids are in Saratoga Schools and are home too. While they sleep in, I have been playing with the 23things page. Chris and I copied shamelessly from others' sites and now I've committed to going through things ahead of the group so that I can find any sites that are blocked as well as any exercises that don't apply to our group.
I started a my blog about reading at the Intermediate School level. You can check that out at: http://siriusreading.blogspot.com
I was a little confused at first about the naming conventions. I get it now, www.blogger.com is for creating blogs and _____.blogspot.com is where you and others can see your blog.
I also figured how to add links to my posts (as you can see with sirius reading) by using the icon that has a world and two links of a chain.
It is January 22 and I have just finished creating a blog. It was not exactly a smooth creation, but it is (at least) up, although in skeleton form. My blog is NewTechLearner.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI, too, was a bit confused with the naming conventions. Since I was not sure what was going to be posted where, my contributor name is SciLady24, but I will change it later.
Looks like I have completed Thing 1 and Thing 2. Now I feel like I should be in a Dr. Seuss book!
The photo of Thing 1 & 2 reside on my desktop, I was not sure about the copyright infringement so I left them off! Oftentimes it will appear as though your posts did not publish to your blog when you view it. I am used to the pages refreshing in other applications but it only works when I refresh (F5 or green up and down arrows button next to the url) the page on my blogspot.
ReplyDeleteTwo comments then I'll paste my main post:
ReplyDelete1. I write my comments to a Word document and then paste them to the comment form. I've had problems trying to preview my posts and then hitting the browser back button to update them only to discover that my original draft is gone.
2. URLs you want to share in your comments do not show up as point and click hyperlinks in the message. One has to cut and paste the URL in a new browser window.
Looking down the list of what we are going to be doing there are lots of apps. I have heard of, but have never done, so I look forward to learning with all of you.
I began blogging a couple years ago. Right now I have two main ones going, one personal and one professional. I use Blogger for one and Wordpress for the other. Both are easy to use and the beauty of a blog you can update it anywhere on any computer. I don’t know all the tricks and am still learning but I’ll share a few things and help out where I can.
A lot of the things I try to do are book taught or self taught and I wind up keeping copious notes on my projects to refer back to them so as to not repeat mistakes, etc. I began posting with words and pictures, in lieu of a the journal, the building of our house addition at http://adkbuildingalone.blogspot.com/ . Mainly for me but for others as well I try to conclude each post with a “What did I learn today?” segment.
The other is the blog I migrated from Blogger to Wordpress . In other words, I began it at Blogger and moved it to Wordpress. No particular reason except at my brother’s suggestion, his blog is part of his business. I use it to keep track of the Holocaust survivors and liberators I have come into contact with. I liked how I was able to manipulate a photo of the liberation day and use it in my heading. And I can track how many visits I get, to what pages, easily. It’s also easy to upload videos but you can probably do the same in blogger. http://teachinghistorymatters.wordpress.com/ I hope to turn the notes I post here into a book someday, and as it is on the Web, it has also led to more survivors and their families becoming aware of the accounts of their liberation.
Matt
I completed the mission. I thought that it was rather easy, but I don't really understand the concept of blogging. Can anyone respond to the blog or do I have to invite people? Will I be kicked out of 23things if I don't use my blog again?
ReplyDeleteMy blog can be found at - doireallyneedablogformysurvivalin2009.blogspot.com
This is Jeff. I don't know what name it will post under.
I am excited to learn about all these great technology tools. I have no idea what many of them are, but hope this course will help me move back into the 21st century. I look foward to exploring the different tools and applying them to teaching.
ReplyDeleteOK - I'm finally on-board. Finding time for lunch is difficult enough say nothing about blogg'en. Soooo I'm having some luke warm "hots" from DJ's and doing my 23 Things. I will save one "hot" for Chelsea the Dog she loves them.
ReplyDeleteWell I am trying to catch up I believe I have created a blog. The only thing on it is my name and a picture maybe? This is all new. I should probably ask my daughter for help she is fourteen and worlds ahead of me on these matters. I believe my conservative nature has made me weary of publishing things out there for others to see. Hopefully a little knowledge will lead to a greater comfort level.
ReplyDeleteI also started my blog, but am not fully sure of how it all works! Who can see your blog?? Do you have to give the site out for people to view it?
ReplyDeleteA word about privacy in your blogs and other Web 2.0 tools we will be exploring. Some of the tools (like Twitter) can make you wonder what their practical uses might be, but part of the fun of exploring is asking and answering questions like that.
ReplyDeleteIs there a way to make a blog private, so they are not indexed by the major search engines?
The short answer is no, there is no sure way to make or keep a blog private. Using a tool like Blogger, you CAN change the settings so that Blogger doesn't publish your blog to other Blogger users. But that does not block the search engines from indexing your blog's contents.
Blogs are by nature social networking tools. They are meant to be shared. That being said, a certain measure of discretion is always wise, be it in a blog, an email message, or another social networking site. With that in mind, be aware that your blog is out there on the Internet, and people can read it. For more details on making Blogger as private as possible: http://dwarfurl.com/da1b6
Hola Amigos!!! Sorry it took so long to get started. I was a little confused at first how to do the whole blogging thing, but now I think that I'm ok. My blog site is: http://dorainemiller.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to learning about all of these new tech things as well as working with all of you. TTYL.
