Week of January 30- February 6

Well done to all who have jumped the highest hurdle of creating your own blog and sharing your experiences. We think this week will expand your understanding of what Web 2.0 is and give you a chance to have some fun on Flickr.

4. Read a few perspectives on Web 2.0, and blog your thoughts.

5. Explore Flickr and learn about this popular image-hosting site. Set up an account and join some groups! And remember, blog about what you learn! Are there other photo-sharing sites that you use and could share?

5 comments:

  1. First a comment on the Web 2.0 article from wikipedia.
    They say of tags:
Tags: categorization of content by creating tags that are simple, one-word descriptions to facilitate searching and avoid rigid, pre-made categories.
I’m getting used to using tags now that I’ve played with flickr and on my reading blog I use tags to describe the title I’m blogging about. Like most people, I do search google first when I am looking for information. But.... those “rigid, pre-made categories” allow us truly elegant searches. It’s the pre-made categories that help me know whether I should tag an item car, auto, honda or van. Without that, the searcher must enter all the possibilities if she wants all the possible answers. In library land, those rigid categories are called subject headings (as opposed to free text) and I’m not ready to abandon them.
btw, I am trying Matt’s method of composing the comment in word and I’ll try to paste it now.

  2. FLICKR
I created a flickr account, my page is open to all but right now it's mostly family. I haven't figured how to upload a whole folder of pictures, I was doing it one photo at a time - slow but it means that all the crummy ones didn't get posted, so that's good. If you want to see my pics, feel free.

I used Flickr a lot the other day. I figured out how to upload lots of photos at a time (I installed there new uploader) and uploaded family photos and ran out of space on my free account.

Note: I suggest that if you want to load a lot of digital pictures you may wish to load the newest first and work backwards. I ran out of space after 111 pictures.

Anyway, I was not really sure what the difference is between Flickr and Picasa. I know that Flickr is a Yahoo product and Picasa is from Google. Both offer ways to organize and share photos. That's about the extent of my knowledge.
If you are interested in the distinction, I recommend this post from another blog. You will notice that this was posted in '07 but the writer just had an update and his views are the same so, if you want to see a comparison of Flickr and Picasa, here 'tis

  4. Flickr is relatively new to me as well. I seem to create new accounts as family members forward me a photo album that, in order to view, I must sign in. I started out using Picasa a few years ago since I am a one stop shop kind of girl and really like all of the Google apps. So far, I find Flickr's uploading of photos to be much slower than Picasa's and I am not crazy about the editing feature in Flickr. It took me twenty minutes to rotate a few images that were portrait view in the uploader and then changed to landscape view once in Flickr. I do know those that use Flickr like it because it has a blogging feature that Picasa does not. I can barely find the time to post my photos let alone blog about them!! Lastly, as we learn more about tags and bookmarking, I took a moment to explore Flickr through tags and while it is a cheap vacation, it did me good to spend five minutes looking at photos tagged of flowers and travel.

  5. I didn't like Flickr at all. It's not as user friendly as Picasa. Picasa is extremely user-friendly and a lot quicker. Flickr kept freezing up or being really slow. I only uploaded one picture. I'm not going to upload any more because I really don't plan on using it. As far as blogging about the photos, I prefer to wait and scrapbook them and put my thoughts there. If anyone is interested in scrapbooking but you don't have much time, try scrapblog.com. It's awesome. You can create a high quality product in a much shorter time. You can order the pages from them or download them as JPEG's and print them yourself. Anyway, I didn't really read the Web 2.0 stuff yet. I looked at it and thought. Wow, that's a lot to read and lost interest quickly. I will read it over vacation.
